Boundaries of paid parking zones from 1 January 2020
Why boundaries of paid parking zones have changed from 1 January 2020?
During peak hours, the parking occupancy rate is over 85 percent on most streets of the capital; it is over 88 percent in the Red Zone and over 94 percent in the Yellow Zone. Even in some areas of the Green Zone, the occupancy rate has reached 94 percent as well. About 20 percent of car traffic in the Old Town consists of drivers looking for parking spaces. Only every sixth driver finds a free parking space immediately in the selected zone.
This change is intended to regulate the flows of vehicle traffic, their improper parking near downtown and in other locations of the city.
The aim is to reduce noise levels in the city, air pollution, and usage of personal transport, while promoting alternative modes of travel. More space is sought to be provided for pedestrians and cyclists. Council has approved the new boundaries of paid parking zones; they came into force from 1 January 2020.
